Angiography is a type of X-ray used to check blood vessels. Blood vessels do not show clearly on a normal X-ray, so a special dye called a contrast agent needs to be injected into your blood first. This highlights your blood vessels, allowing your doctor to see any problems.

Before your angiogram procedure starts, your health care team will review your medical history, including allergies and medications you take. The team may perform a physical exam and check your vital signs — blood pressure and pulse. You'll also empty your bladder and change into a hospital gown.

Most people who have angiography do not have complications, but there's a small chance of minor or more serious complications. Possible minor complications include: an infection where the cut was made, causing the area to become red, hot, swollen and painful – this may need to be treated with antibiotics.

The purpose of this procedure is to see if the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked and to look for abnormalities of heart muscle or heart valves. You may undergo various tests before the angiogram, including blood tests, an electrocardiogram, chest x-ray or cardiac CT.
